Demographics
This rural, agriculturally based community is located in the northern section of the Texas Panhandle approximately 30 miles west of Amarillo. Vega, Texas, is the county seat of Oldham County which measures 50 miles by 30 miles and is larger than the state of Rhode Island. The county's varied and diverse agricultural base controls its livelihood. This diversity encompasses various agricultural endeavors including dry-land farming, irrigated farming, storage and processing facilities, and a vast cattle industry.
The population of Oldham County is approximately 2,185 and the city of Vega has 936 residents. Vega Independent School District currently has an enrollment of 283 students in grades K-12. The dropout rate for Vega ISD is 0%. The attendance rate is 97.6%. The ethnic populations are as follows: 83.6% White, 13.2% Hispanic, .4% African American, 1.8% Asian of Pacific Islander, and 1.1% Native American. The percent of graduates planning to attend college is 88%. All K-12 grades are on one campus and the high school receives transfer students from Wildorado. This is a neighboring small, rural school without a secondary curriculum. The student population is comprised of 28.9% transfer students.
The District employs 55 people. This comprises of 35 teachers, 4 classroom aides, 4 administrators, and 12 support personnel. The average years of experience per employee is 14.3 years.
Education is extremely important to the citizens and business community of Vega and Oldham County. They understand that the moral and economic stability of a community is directly related to the intelligence level of its citizens. The Vega Independent School District, like many other school districts, is working hard to improve in the following areas: reading and mathematics test scores, increasing the number of students entering college preparatory programs, raising the average daily attendance rate, lowering the dropout rate, and ensuring student participation in lifelong learning.
