December's Notes ...

Wow! It has been such a busy school year so far that it is hard to believe that the holiday season is here.  I hope that your Thanksgiving holiday was enjoyable.

I though that I would begin with an update of what has occurred within the counseling department so far this school year.

Within Kirksey Elementary, I have been meeting with the classes and getting to know all of the students.  We have been discussing; friendships, manners, personal safety issues, respect and citizenship. Red-ribbon week which is a drug and alcohol awareness campaign at the national level was also discussed and celebrated through lessons and goodie bags full of coloring books, crayons, etc.

Prior to the Christmas Break I will be presenting an assembly in conjunction with our Fire Department and EMS concerning Bullies.

At the Junior High level, I have also been meeting with these students regularly and have been discussing leadership roles, peer pressure, personal choices and respect both for themselves and others. They are the future leaders of BHS and the younger Kiowa’s look up to them. Educationally, the 7th graders participated in a Field Test for the state.  While I don’t yet have results, I do have to say that this class was very well behaved and I had a great time working with them.

Finally, while I have only been working with the 9th-12th grade students for about 15 weeks, many relationships have already been formed.   This is a great group of students, many of whom have great goals and aspirations, which is why I call on all who associate with them to encourage them to finish high school, take the ACT, apply to a college, university or trade school and to SUCCEED.

Attention: SENIORS AND PARENTS OF A SENIOR STUDENT:

Also, as I have already spoken with many of the senior parents, it is my goal for your child to have access to $100,000.00 in scholarship applications. So far this year, the seniors have already been given the opportunity to apply for almost $30,000.00 in scholarship money.  I would recommend that a folder be started at home with all of the scholarships applications and that the due date be highlighted on each so that a date didn’t sneak up and pass by.   This folder will allow all of you to work together and be successful in your child’s quest for scholarship money.

·       A new program for our Seniors, I am scheduling various college, trade schools and university’s to come in and meet with our seniors in a small group setting in order for them to ask questions and get some of the answers they are looking for.
