My favorite book is " The Gold Cadillac," by Mildred D. Taylor. I read this book in my Reading class, here is the summary about , " The Gold Cadillac." This book deals with the unfair treatment of a colored family who bought a brand new gold cadillac. The book is narrated by a young girl named 'lois whose father just purchased a new car. The whole family is excited, except Dee, 'lois mother. The family was saving money for a new house, and 'lois' father just bought the cadillac without even talking to Dee. 'Lois and her family were going down south in their new car, 'lois and her sister didn't see why the rest of their family was telling their father not to go. The day they got food, clothes, and toys and got in the car. On the way down south 'lois and Wilma, her older sister, noticed lots of people staring at them. They never stopped to use the restroom, or eat. When it was time to sleep they just slept in the car. One morning while they were driving, 'lois family got pulled over. Her father was taking by the police, accused of stealing the car and speeding. He was taking to the local police station. He was kept there for hours. The police let him go and gave him his car back. When the family continued, Wilma asked her father why the police had done that, and why they weren't allowed to go into resturants owned by white people. He told both the girls that white people thought of blacks as poor people. That they wouldn't have enough money to afford a car like that. Dee still wasn't talking to her husband. When they got to their relatives house they stayed the night for a couple of days and went back home. When they got back 'lois' father sold the car for a cheaper one. He went to Dee and brought her outside to show her the new car. She wondered why he had done that, and he told her, " What happened to the house we were going to buy?" That is the summary of " The Gold Cadillac." |
